ELIO was founded in 2024 at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. As a development lab, it brings together science, technology companies, and cultural institutions.
Our goal: to develop practical solutions for the digitization of museum objects. The spectrum ranges from intelligent scanning systems to automated data processing and sustainable business models.
The starting point: many current systems are too expensive, too inflexible or only suitable for individual projects. This is precisely where ELIO comes in – practical, open, and future-oriented.

The ELIO project will run from April 2024 to April 2027.
It is funded by the Senate Department for Higher Education and Research, Health and Long-Term Care, as well as by the European Regional Development Fund.
ELIO is based at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. It works closely with partners from the fields of science, technology and Berlin’s innovation ecosystem. The aim is to develop transferable digital solutions for the recording, cataloguing and presentation of collections. These solutions are intended to serve as a model for museums and cultural institutions throughout the German-speaking world.
